Chris Completes Work Placement At Largest Genomics Facility In The UK

A Central Saint Michael’s Sixth Former witnessed first-hand the professionals at work at the largest genomics facility in the UK.
Chris, one of our A Level Maths learners, completed his future-shaping work experience placement at West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL), based at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Chris later said: “Putting into practice topics I’d only learned in class helped me see the value of practical work. Being in the labs was surreal, and watching professionals at work showed me the personal standards I’d need to meet to succeed. If I could go again, I would. I definitely recommend it to get a real idea of what you may or may not want to do.”

Deputy Campus Principal, Nisha Sroa, said: “Work placements like this help our learners turn knowledge into experience, explore potential career paths, and understand what’s expected in a real working environment. They build confidence, raise aspirations, and equip learners with the work-ready skills employers truly value.”
