Learners Showcase Public Speaking Skills In Inter-College Debate

Eloquent learners from Central Saint Michael’s Sixth Form got the chance to polish their public speaking skills in a competitive inter-college debate.

Eight against eight, the two teams travelled to Kings Norton to compete against Cadbury Sixth Form College, which is also part of The Sandwell Colleges, in the inaugural debating contest.

With support from external partner Debate Mate, students constructed arguments around a variety of topics, showcasing their growing public speaking skillsets and impressive abilities to engage spontaneously with a motion, challenging proposition and opposition arguments on the spot.

Debating complex and challenging topics, students demonstrated research, critical thinking, teamwork and confident communication – skills essential for success in higher education and the workplace – and developed key employability skills.

Students are now looking ahead to the return fixture at Central Saint Michael’s campus in the spring.

Humanities Curriculum Lead, David Corbett, said: “Well done to all who took part in what was a shining example of cross-college unity. Experiences like this help learners sharpen their thinking, articulate ideas clearly, and build the confidence needed to be work-ready for their next steps.”
