The GCSE Biology course is designed for students who either don’t currently hold a GCSE in Biology at a grade 4 or above (or equivalent), or who are looking to improve their Biology skills for various purposes. GCSE Biology helps you gain a fundamental understanding of living organisms and their interactions with the environment, as well as developing your scientific thinking skills. It provides you with a foundation for further studies in Biology and related fields, and opens doors to careers in healthcare, science and more.

You will also develop scientific inquiry skills by gathering evidence and drawing conclusions; critical thinking skills by analysing data and evaluating arguments; and communication skills, both orally and in writing.

Specialist science laboratories for practical experiments and research

As this is a GCSE Biology resit course you should have GCSE Biology or Combined Science at grade 4 . All students doing GCSE resit courses should have at least five GCSEs at grade 3-4 in academic subjects, including English Language and Maths.

Paper 1 (50%)

Topics 1 to 4 are assessed by 1 hour 45 minute written exam. Questions are multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response.

Paper 2 (50%)

Topics 5 to 7 are assessed by 1 hour 45 minute written exam. Questions are multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response.

You can progress to A Level Biology, T Levels or vocational qualifications like Applied BTECs, apprenticeships or employment.
A Levels are the most common choice, particularly if you are planning to go on to university, and you may require specific grades in relevant subjects. Vocational qualifications like BTECs offer hands-on learning and are linked to specific career areas. Apprenticeships provide practical training and employment, while higher education can lead to degree programmes.
