IWD25: From Politics To Engineering

We are proud to recognise our Central Saint Michael’s alumna Tamara Herrington ahead of International Women’s Day.
Tamara is a Durham University Politics graduate who studied A Level Politics, Geography and Biology with us and is now an engineer for leading insurance, wealth and retirement business Aviva.

Last year Tamara moved from Software Engineer for the Data Insights team over to Run Team Engineer, making sure Aviva’s IT systems are secure, efficient and reliable. She also received a Merit in her Code First Girls software degree course, sponsored by Aviva.
With a keen interest in cloud computing, information security and data privacy, Tamara is an experienced creator of projects using C#, .Net, Powershell, Python, Java, HTML, CSS and Javascript.
Her projects include front-end web design, API development, scripting, web app monitoring, cloud security, green software, and many more.

From her politics degree Tamara developed special interests in warfare technology, AI ethics, electoral statistical analysis, security politics and MENA regional politics.
One of her university highlights was speaking in the debate ‘This House Fears the Rise of Artificial Intelligence’. Tamara opposed the argument, outlining that AI technology itself is nothing to fear, but rather those who create and implement AI and how our data and privacy is handled by entities using AI.

Tamara adds: “While I spoke about my concerns around the people that utilise AI, I made sure to add as many sci-fi pop culture references as I could! AI is a scary subject for many of us, but I’m looking forward to a future where AI helps humanity achieve some really cool things (mostly space exploration).”

Outside of work, Tamara’s hobbies include model tank building and planespotting.
