Flying The Flag For Antarctica

We’re proud to announce that flags designed by our learners at Central Saint Michael’s Sixth Form have officially made it all the way to Antarctica as part of the UK Polar Network’s Antarctic Flags Project.
Rihem’s hand‑drawn design and Gurpreet’s computer‑generated design were awarded first place, with Jake, Danny‑Ray and Samanta recognised as runners‑up. The winners’ creative Antarctic flags were sent into the field with a team of polar researchers – an achievement that quite literally travelled to the ends of the Earth.
The winning flags were taken to Rothera Research Station by flag bearer Tim Ferns, Assistant Project Manager for Rothera Renewable Energy at the British Antarctic Survey. This unique opportunity allowed our learners to showcase their creativity while deepening their global awareness and environmental understanding – valuable experiences that will also strengthen their UCAS applications.
The UK Polar Network plays a vital role in making polar education accessible, engaging and inclusive, inspiring new generations to learn about Antarctica and the importance of Antarctica Day. As the Antarctic has no official flag, this project encourages young people to imagine what a symbol for this extraordinary continent could represent.
