Learner Of The Month Spotlight: Gerrard

Congratulations to Gerrard, twice one of our Learners of the Month for Humanities & Social Sciences at Central Saint Michael’s Sixth Form.

This is the second time Gerrard has won the award, which was presented by the West Midlands High Sheriff, Mark Smith, recognising not only his academic achievement but his commitment to personal growth and excellence too.

Gerrard has demonstrated an exceptional work ethic, independently covering course content ahead of time. His self-motivation, intellectual curiosity and proactive approach to learning reflect the academic independence and determination needed for progression to higher study and future success.

Reflecting on his experience, Gerrard highlighted the value of strong peer relationships, independent learning and the consistent support of teaching and pastoral staff, emphasising how a culture of high expectations and care helps learners thrive.

He said: “Throughout my time in Central Saint Michael’s, my experience has been amazing. I got to meet people who have great minds much like my own, and would make good companions throughout this journey. At first, I felt I was the only person to take on this academic ordeal. However, by reaching out and appealing to many people through my intellectual talent, I was able to establish a strong camaraderie with people; people who I want to share my ideas and opinions with. And that’s the essence of Central Saint Michael’s. It is a place where the essence of friendship permeates the ambience in every positive aspect.

“Moreover, because of the amazing teachers, I was able to consistently excel in my studies, which time after time, nurtured my independent learning with active recall and thorough research. This fortified a mindset which will last for years. As I nearly approach the end of my A Level courses, my teachers are doing everything they can to support me, to ensure that I get the best grades for university, and I appreciate their efforts for doing this. It wasn’t just in lessons however. It was also in people’s day to day lives. When people were at their lowest points or when something tragic happens to a particular person, teachers (especially tutors) were always there to support them to the best of their ability. When they do this, they appeal to a broad spectrum of people, from those who are academically independent, to those who need help in standing on their own effort. For that reason, I am glad to have the opportunity in this awards event to thank each and every teacher for their consistent merit. If it was not for them, I would not have earned this reward in the first place.

“I am honoured to have achieved this reward. Twice. The Learner of the Month Awards are not just about commemorating and celebrating each and every student’s milestones, but also to credit the efforts that each and every teacher inputs in making sure that students do very well. And to also credit every staff’s contribution in making this event happen in the first place. Students, staff and everyone have played a vital part in making sure this event happens. Everyone is a learner in their own way, and intellects in their own domains, but the unified synergy and the strong camaraderies being made along the way, makes this event and every upcoming event a testament to the reputation of the College.”

Gerrard is a strong example of ambition, resilience and the impact of a supportive learning environment.
