If you are interested in studying Psychology in a work-related context, the Applied Psychology course is aimed at you. It’s designed to be practical and applied rather than purely theoretical – so it suits students who like real-world examples and coursework-based assessment as a vocational alternative to A Level exams. This course is ideal for students considering careers in areas like mental health, education, social work, counselling, health and social care, or other fields where understanding human behaviour is important. It’s also ideal for those planning to go to university, especially for courses like Psychology, Criminology, Health and Social Care, or Social Sciences, because the qualification carries UCAS points. If you want to enter the workforce directly, particularly into psychology-related support roles, education settings, youth work, or healthcare sectors, again this qualification will work for you.

Content Overview

This qualification includes four mandatory units:

Unit 1. Psychological Approaches and Applications (Understanding key theories and how they explain behaviour)
Unit 2. Conducting Psychological Research (Learning research methods and carrying out investigations)
Unit 3. Health Psychology (How psychology helps explain health-related behaviours like addiction)
Unit 6. Introduction to Psychopathology (Understanding mental health conditions, diagnoses, and treatments)

You will need five GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English Language, and GCSE Maths at grade 4 or above. You should also have GCSE Double Science at grade 4 or above, or two GCSEs in Science, including Biology, at grade 4 or above.

Guest Speaker Sessions – Talks from practising psychologists and university lecturers on careers in psychology and current research developments.
Elevate Education ‘Ace your Exams’ Workshop – A student-focused session aimed at improving memory, recall and exam performance strategies.
Mental Health Awareness Workshops – Collaborative sessions with external organisations focusing on wellbeing, stress management, and understanding mental health.

For when you’re not studying, we offer a whole range of enrichment activities which are not only good fun but help you make friends, develop new skills and add to your CV and university applications. There are trips and visits to bring your studies to life, and you can get involved in sport, debating and many other activities.
Through the Student Union and our college committees, you can get involved in volunteering, enterprise, fundraising projects or the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. We run societies like the Medical Society for you to join and we organise events and festivals to celebrate our inclusive and diverse community. As for entertainment, we regularly host film nights and go on theatre trips to see live productions.

A mix of internal coursework for Unit 2 (assignments and practical investigations) and external exams for Units 1 and 3.
Coursework focuses on applying psychological theories to real-life scenarios.

You could progress to higher education degrees in nursing and social work, employment or an apprenticeship. Example career options include clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, sport and exercise psychologist as well as mental health worker, human resources officer, and many more.

Career pathways include:

Clinical or Forensic Psychologist – Help diagnose and treat mental health conditions or work with offenders in criminal justice settings.
Criminology and Criminal Profiling – Use psychological insights to understand criminal behaviour and support investigations.
Educational Psychology or Teaching – Support students with learning needs or train to become an inspiring classroom teacher.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Roles – Become a counsellor, therapist, or mental health advocate, making a real difference in people’s lives.
