Whether you wish to work in a large organisation or you are an aspiring entrepreneur with ambitions of starting your own business, studying A Level Business gives you an understanding of how businesses work and the decision-making processes behind them. A Level Business helps you understand key concepts like planning, finance and market research, and provides foundational knowledge that is valuable in the workplace if you are aiming to enter business-related careers such as accounting, HR, sales, project management or logistics. You do not need to have studied Business at GCSE to study this course which prepares students for university courses in Business, Finance, Economics, Marketing or Management.

All students studying A Levels should have at least five GCSEs at grade 9 – 5 in academic subjects. Two of these should be grade 6.

Specifically for Business, you will need GCSE Maths at grade 5 or above.

  1. Business Enterprise Challenge (Internal Competition)
  • Students form teams to create and pitch a business idea to a panel of judges (teachers and external business mentors)
  • Key skills developed: entrepreneurship, teamwork, presentation, and problem-solving
  • Linked to exam board topics: entrepreneurship, business planning, marketing mix
  1. Guest Speaker Series – Local Entrepreneurs & Bank Representatives
  • Visitors include local business owner, marketing manager and bank relationship officer
  • Topics include financing start-ups, marketing strategies, and the impact of economic changes
  • Helps students apply financial and marketing theory to real businesses
  1. University Taster Days (Business & Economics Departments)
  • Visits to local universities for introductory lectures on business strategy, entrepreneurship or economics
  • Supports progression to higher education and links theory to academic research
  1. Business Ethics Debate
  • Students research and debate ethical issues in business such as fair trade, sustainability or executive pay
  • Builds critical thinking and links to corporate social responsibility and Carroll’s pyramid
  1. Visits to Local SMEs or Franchises
  • Provides insight into daily business operations, customer service and HR practices in small businesses
  • Reinforces classroom learning with practical observations

For when you’re not studying, we offer a whole range of enrichment activities which are not only good fun but help you make friends, develop new skills and add to your CV and university applications. There are trips and visits to bring your studies to life, and you can get involved in sport, debating and many other activities.

Through the Student Union and our college committees, you can get involved in volunteering, enterprise, fundraising projects or the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. We organise events and festivals to celebrate our inclusive and diverse community. As for entertainment, we regularly host film nights and go on theatre trips to see live productions.

Assessment Overview

AS Level Business

  • Assessment method: 100% exam (no coursework)
  • Two papers:
    Paper 1: Business 1
    – Short-answer, data response, and one extended essay
    – 1 hour 30 minutes – 80 marks

Paper 2: Business 2
– Case study-based questions
– 1 hour 30 minutes – 80 marks

  • Total: 100% of AS qualification

A Level Business (Full Two-Year Course)

  • Assessment method: 100% exam (no coursework)
  • Three papers:
    Paper 1: Business 1
    – Multiple-choice, short-answer, and two essays
    – Covers all content
    – 2 hours – 100 marks

Paper 2: Business 2
– Three data response questions (choice of one from two in each section)
– 2 hours – 100 marks

Paper 3: Business 3
– One case study with six structured questions
– Focus on applying strategic models and decision-making
– 2 hours – 100 marks

  • Each paper is worth 33.3% of the final A Level grade.

To help with students’ assessments, we give regular past papers for practice and give model answers and examiners’ feedback. We provide essay writing workshops and exam technique coaching as well as general revision sessions and drop-ins.

You can progress to study a wide range of business-related degrees, offered at most UK universities and often including placement years in industry, such as:

  • Business Management
  • Marketing
  • Accounting and Finance
  • Economics
  • International Business

Earn while you learn through business-focused degree apprenticeships, offered by companies like PwC, KPMG, Santander and BT, in partnership with universities, including:

  • Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship
  • Digital Marketing
  • Business Administration
  • Financial Services

You can also take a more vocational route with Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) or Foundation Degrees, often studied through partner universities with the option to ‘top-up’ to a full degree, in specialist areas such as:

  • Business & Enterprise
  • Retail Management
  • Hospitality and Tourism Business

You could also enter employment roles in business or administration, such as:

  • Sales associate or marketing assistant
  • Junior accountant
  • Business support administrator
  • Customer service advisor

Students interested in launching their own ventures can apply their learning to:

  • Create and run a small business
  • Access funding through start-up loans or enterprise schemes

You could also pursue industry-specific professional qualifications such as:

  • AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians)
  • CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing)
  • CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) for HR careers

These can be studied full-time or part-time while working.
